Nice!

This is a really well produced song.
I don't have anything bad to say, i can't think of anything. This deserves my 5 vote.

Ps. Sorry for the short review, but House isn't really a genre i can properly review :p

nightsurfermusic responds:

Heh, that's alright, every review counts! :)

I enjoyed it, especially the last part.

So, here's my review. Have fun reading it :p

DnB:
Like you said, this is the worst part in the song. It's good that you started with it though, because then the song only gets better :p
But yeah, the drums are way too weak and the bass is too smooth and repetitive. For this part i give you a 5.8/10

Dance:
Here's where things get better.
First of all, the kick should be way stonger. I like the bass though and the piano is really good. The sound of the piano sounds a bit muddy though. Muddy as in, it could be much clearer.
This part gets a 7/10

Classical:
My favourite genre :3
The pizzicato strings have too much bass compared to the rest of the song. I would consider letting them play an octave higher, or finding a different soundfont/vst for them. I like the sound of the flute though and what it's playing too. But yeah, my biggest problem with this really is the pizzicato strings and how bassy they are, drowning out the rest of the instruments.
This part gets a 7.5/10

The Windows part:
I liked this part, except the melody :p
When the melody comes in (at 02:49) it really sounds out of tune to me. It just sounds.. wrong. I don't know if that's dissonance, but if it is.. then i don't like dissonance :p I'm not sure if that's intentional though, so if it isn't intentional then it just sounds out of tune. The rest sounds ok though :-)
This part gets a 6.5/10

Medieval:
I really like this part the best.
The flute melodies sound so nice and the drums are very good on this too.
I'm looking for something to criticise on this part, but i can't find anything.. good job :-)
This part gets a 9/10

Overall:
The transistions are good and i enjoyed listening to this.
For the transistions i give you a 8/10

Score:
5.8 + 7 + 7.5 + 6.5 + 9 + 8 / 6 = 7.3
+ 0.2 for the effort = 7.5
:-)

Keep it up!

Step responds:

Wow, so this is how it feels like getting long reviews! :D. Thanks a bunch man, it's not everyday that you get a dedicated reviewer like yourself giving so much constructive criticism other than hearing the intro only and giving a 10 or 0 depending on if the intro is good or bad, leaving a useless one-liner...

Anway, since it's only fair giving a long response to a long review, here we go:

Drum'n'Bass:
I seriously hate composing drum'n'bass strangely. Maybe it's lack of good samples, maybe I just don't have that talent to make DnB songs sound so dirty and crazily awesome, maybe it's just me, but DnB IMO is really boring to compose... Oh well, you're completely right - the drum samples were simply random sounds I got from the Net, and the bass sample isn't really made for DnB where bass is almost the main instrument, but rather just as a background instrument, so I suppose I might have done slightly better with some better samples.

Dance:
We made this ages ago, now are kicks are so heavy that they increase the listener's heartbeat to thrice as much as normal xP. Seriously though, you're right here too (are you ever wrong?? :P). The kick was actually a very heavily edited FL Sytrus Preset called Hydronium - I removed the other drum sounds, removed the synths that were playing in it, leaving only the kick, and used that. As for that piano, at the time I didn't have a good enough sample, and I know exactly what you mean by muddy. Now I have a piano sample that sounds almost like a real piano, so I'm fine xP.

Classical:
Heh, same here. Songs like Danman87's, MaestroRage's or DavidOrr's songs are the types of classical songs that really impress me, you know the crazy epic ones XD. Anyway, I never thought the pizzicato were too bassy, but maybe you're right; I should move it up an octave. The sound of that flute came from a soundfont (and a free one at that - Unison), so I never expected it to sound so good, and the first time I heard it my eyes widened :P.

Windows:
I found out it's dissonant ever since Blackhole12 told me it was :P. Well, you're right about this too. TBH I worked harder on the drums in this than I did on the melodies - I may redo this part with better melodies, and maybe add some harmony :P. I think this is my worst attempt at an XP song - maybe my best is All Hail Windows 1 or 2. Oh well, I should work harder on Windows next time :P.

Medieval:
I'm actually quite surprised that people liked this part so much when I showed it to them; maybe if you want and if it doesn't bother you, I can send you a PM if Scooter-16 and I make another Medieval song ;).

Overall:
Aww, an 8 on the transitions? Why not a 10? :P Lol, joking. Admittedly, there are some transitions that I worked only a few seconds on, namely the part from Drum'n'Bass to Dance.

Score:
Hehe, I like it when people round up the 7.5 to an 8 how it's supposed to be and not down to a 7 :P. Thanks!

Anyway, thanks a LOT for the review; these are the kind of reviews I need to improve my work, and if I ever edit this song and it ends up reaching something like a Top-5/frontpage, I'll credit you for being the reason why I made it up there :P. Oops, my response ended up longer than the review xP. Oh well, thanks again for the great feedback and advice!
*Goes to review one of your songs*

This is pretty awesome!

This is a really nice song you got here.
Although i think the sound of some of the crashes could be better, quality wise :p
But yeah, it's just a really nice song. What a generic thing to say, but i can't think of anything else xD
Also, normally i'm not really into metal, but i can enjoy this. I like the riffs, 'specially the main motive (starts at 00:16) that keeps stuck in my head.
Good luck in the deathmatch!
Note to self: organise a deathmatch fight.. with pillows.

Yeah, the drums seem to be my problem on most of my songs. I tried to find the best sounding individual sounds for the drums as i could with the demo.

Oh and be careful, pillow fights her get dangerous! =P

Cool song!

Well, my review will not be as long as Quarl's review, but i can hope i pick some things out that could've been better or that i wanted to hear a bit different.
But before i do that, i want to say that Quarl made some very good points, especially about the dynamics. You did play around with it, i can hear that, but not enough i think.
Now, the only advice i can give you that isn't mentioned in Quarl's review, is as follows.
The section from 00:55 to 01:12 is good, but could be more humanized. The notes are too perfectly timed, if you know what i mean. Some little adjusting of the timing of those notes, so that they are not timed perfectly, could be easier on the ear. It could also be that i'm completely wrong, but you can always try, right? :p
And now, i'm going to compare this song to something and at this moment i have no idea what that's going to be. Let me listen again.. hmm.. yes.. aha!
It's like a huge cake. It looks perfect. On the sides are candles and they are all burning. But the cake is pretty high and on top there's 1 candle that isn't burning. Someone grabs a ladder and puts it next to the cake. He climbs the ladder, but because the cake is so wide, he can't reach the candle with his lighter. He is very close though. If he had reached the last candle, the cake (your song) would have been perfect. But it doesn't really matter anyway, the cake still looks very nice and doesn't taste worse because one stupid candle is not burning.
While i was writing this review, the song played about 4 or 5 times and i didn't have the urge to click the stop button. That's a good thing :-)
Great job on this song!

Out Of Mind

Probably the last piece for Newgrounds, therefore, a poem.

Out Of Mind
I'm sitting here, lonely, in my room.
The lights are off and it's a dark, dark afternoon.
Rain is falling outside, it's the only sound i hear.
It's calm around me, but chaos in my head. I try to make my mind clear.
But i'm not succeeding, it keeps getting worse.
When will it stop, this nightmare, this curse?
I take a look outside, the streets are dark and wet.
I walk from the window and i lay down on my bed.
''This is it'' i softly say to myself.
If there's a common enemy, then it's life itself.
It's a fight that keeps going on, and on, and on.
It's a fight that only stops, only stops when you are gone.
But i won't give up now, i came so far.
No, i won't give up and i will win this war.
I stand up and walk outside.
The rain falls down on me, but in me, i feel pride.
There's nothing that can stop me now, nothing to hold me back.
Slowly the sky turns from grey to black.
''Come and get me'' i shout towards the sky.
Farewell my friend, this is my goodbye.

Excellent piece of music and good luck in the future!

Wow...that you've honoured my song with a poem is just the greatest compliment I could ever achieve! A big thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings, I hope you never stop to express yourself through art. Thank you!

What more can I say...

Amazing!

Some of your best, if not your best work!
What i love about this song is.. everything.
But what i like the most is probably the percussion. And that voice too. It almost sounds Gladiator(ish) in the beginning with the voice.
And the title fits too. It sounds like this song is a journey on itself. It takes you to the places that you want to go, it doesn't matter where.
These kind of songs should be in a Flash, or even a real movie.
Like you see, all i can do is praise this song. Great job!

Thanks so much for the favorite man! that means alot! The title was made by Benesh. He is so creative yeah ^^

Thanks a ton!!

So you wanted me to review? ;-)

So, i opened this page, turned the volume up and waited for the music to start.
And when it started i was just.. hypnotised. I listened to the whole song and although the song is 03:42 long, it felt like 10 seconds or something. Good things go by too fast. Fortunatly, there is a download button so i can listen to this song whenever and wherever i want. Over and over again.
There's is nothing in this song that i didn't like or that could be better.
So yeah, this review is pretty pointless, but i just wanted to let you know that you've done a wonderful job composing this.

The picture this created in my head was as follows:
A group of people were being held in a city, where they work as slaves. They work very hard and all they get in return is bread, water and a shed to sleep in.
After years and years of doing this they finally see an opportunity to escape.
The escape is succesful, but what should they do now? They have no homes to return to and if they go back to the city where they were hold as slaves they will be killed. The only option is to walk. Walk far, far away from here.
After a couple days of walking they see a hill. It's covered with grass and flowers.
The group runs up the hill and what they see when they're on top of it is beautiful. It's a large lake surrounded by all kinds of trees with fruit. The decision to stay here is made quickly.
After all those years of slavery they finally get their deserved rest and everybody is happy.
They will stay here the rest of their lifes.

Real smooth

I always try to make my reviews a bit lenghty, but i'm afraid i can't do that this time. I listened to this song two times in a row looking for something i could bitch about, but you made bitching impossible for me. So, i'm just going to review now and see what pops up in my mind.
When the song began the first thing i noticed was the kick. It sounds so deep and smooth, i absolutely love it. Especially combined with that bass you have there. The strings you used are awesome too and they create the whole atmosphere in this song.
I can't really tell what the other synth/instrument that comes in is. Is that an electric guitar? Hmm, nevermind i don't think that's an electric guitar, but a synth you made/used.
Anyway, i love the effect that's on it. I think it's vibrato, but i could be wrong.
What i also really like is how the drums stop for a while at 00:43. Well, not all the drums, the snare drum is still playing. But it's brilliant how the kick stops first, then the hi-hats play a little more and stops too, the snare drum just keeps on going and then the hi-hats start again and the kick comes in again too. Now, if you just listen to the song you won't really notice that they are missing but still it brings variaty. And did i tell you that bassline is awesome? Well, it is. And the melody that is played on that electric guitar/synth is really sweet too. Now it's starting to get to the end of the song, the electric guitar/synth stops playing, the high strings stop too so now only the drums, the bass and the low strings are playing, just like in the beginning of the song. And now.. it loops perfectly! I mean, because of the NG music player you have to listen to it a couple of times before it loops good, but now it loops perfectly. I wonder why you made this a song and not a loop :P
Also, this is the kind of track that would sound amazing with lyrics, BUT it doesn't need lyrics. With or without lyrics, this song is amazing.
So, it looks like i could make my review a bit lenghty after all :P
Now all there's left to do is give you my score, which won't really suprise you:

Syntrus responds:

Thank your for your lengthy review. That synth was a keyboard played through a guitar amp.

So, classical this time :-)

I'm glad that you've written a classical song, because that's about the only genre i can write a proper review for. There are exceptions ofcourse :P
First of all i want to say that the sound quality is superb and the instrumentation is too. The intro with the piano is pretty good, but i think that the melody is a bit.. static, if you know what i mean. It's a good melody, it just needs to be humanized more. You could work with dynamics on the piano too, but saying that makes me a hypocrite :P
The flute that joins the piano in the intro is really smooth and well placed.
The low strings are really good too, because they bring a bit more balance to the song. Then a timpani roll comes in, together with a reversed cymbal. Those two are always useful if you use them correctly. Which you did.
The melody after that, that is played on the pizzicato strings is really nice. It has the same feeling as the melody on the piano intro, but it's better. Also, the percussion is excellent! It really drives the song.
However, when the percussion goes solo you could add a bit more to it. It just feels kind of slow. I'm not saying that the solo is not good though, because it is. It's just not great.
After the percussion solo the song gets a more serious tone. You left the percussion out here which is a pretty good choice. Also, i like how the strings work together with the piano here and now the timpani roll + the reversed cymbal come in again. The same percussion loop as before comes in. Maybe you could've add a bit more variaty in there.
At 02:13 it's a pretty nice change, but it's just the same as the intro. Except that the low strings play along from the beginning. You really should've made a more advanced melody here. The last note is a bit weird too. You made the correct choice by making the last note a D#, but it still feels weird because the flute and the strings just stop before that last note. What i would've done is this: let the flute play on 2 octaves (maybe even 3) on the D# and hold that note for a while (probably 4 beats). The note that the piano hits as the last note now is good and the velocity too, so i wouldn't change that. And the i let the low string play (softly) on the G and hold that for 4 beats as well. Then add an automation clip to fade out the flute and the strings and there you have your smooth ending :P
This is just what i should do though :P
Now all that's left to do is give you your score and i hope that i was a bit helpful to you.

These kinds of reviews are what drive artists like myself to become better. Your clear understanding of music theory and neutral constructive opinions provice me an oppertunity to improive, and for this, I am very thankful. I will take what you have said to heart and very likely implement it in another song in the near futire.

Thank you so much for your time in your review

<3 Nate

You stole a song title from me :O

Haha, seriously, i have a song with the same title. It's very different than this though, so i won't make any comparisons. And if i would this song pwn mine anyway :P
But let's get started with reviewing now.
In the beginning i really like the dynamics of those strings. All of the details you add are so good too! The flutes, the little bells and i think i even hear a marimba there(?).
The bass is great too. It's in a great spot in the mix and gives the song some foundation.
You know, it's always so hard to review your songs. There is so much going on and it's changing constantly. I just don't have the time to focus on all the things that are going on simultaneously. Don't think that's negative though, because there's so much going on you can listen to this again and again and again without that it becomes repetitive.
I really love those string runs!
What i also like is the moment when this song ''explodes'' (on 00:44). Normally loops don't have a climax like that, but here it worked just fine. It loops great too!
Another thing that i like to point out is the snaredrum that plays right after that moment on 00:44. It seems like it plays little flam notes and i love that!
Well, not really much more to say here. Keep up the great work that you're doing and maybe i'll watch a movie in the cinema someday with your music in it :P

blackattackbitch responds:

Glad you checked out my song, even after I haven't checked out anyone elses in quite some time :(

I can assure you, I did not use a marimba hahaha

I was worried about the section at :44 cuz it might throw the listener off when he's playing the game it's intended for. Basically, it's better suited as just a listening song, rather than a song for a video game.

The snare effect might be because I used the Squidfont snares instead of the regular solo snares that I usually use. I like the SQ snares because of their multiple articulations.

Sorry about the song title though, I wasn't aware. At least I put the BAB in front of it lol

I see you..
