Drumming: my drug

Posted by FairSquare - June 2nd, 2009

Warning: This newspost is about drumming, as you can see in the title. If you don't like / hate drumming, then please don't read this :P

Anyway, about drumming.
I've always liked drumming, but i never really thought of taking lessons or purchasing a drumset. That was in my ''old'' life when i lived in another city. I lived in that city for like, 14 years (i'm 17 now).
When i moved to another city (where i currently live), i made some new friends and one of them was a drummer. Btw, he was a classmate of mine, that's how i got to know him.
One day we had music lessons and we were going to learn to play a basic drum beat. When i started to drum and it just felt... SO good to drum. After that music lesson i decided to take drum lessons, but i didn't really tell anyone about my plans. Some time passed and slowly my enthousiasm drifted away. Until i told my friend, who i mentioned before. He told me that i really should take drum lessons. Now, i have no idea if he reads this, but thanks for that :P
Anyway, i signed in for drum lessons. After i had 3 or 4 lessons i purchased my drumset.
It's not a high quality one or something, but that was ok with me.
When i had my first drum lessons i was really excited and played alot on my drums at home. But, because the things i had to practice were too simple for me, i slowly lost my interest.
I think my drum teacher noticed that and asked me if i wanted to play some real songs, in stead of crappy songs that come with the drumbook. I really wanted to do that and i chose to play the song Bring Down Tomorrow by Di-rect (a Dutch band).
I think i never played so much drums like i did in that week i practiced it.
Since then i never lost my enthousiasm for drums. Of course, some weeks i play the drums more than in other weeks, but i now i play the drums at least half an hour per 2 days.

The reason i wrote this, is that i just played the drums, and i when play the drums i get really hyped up. Like i said; drumming is my drug.

Also, if you get the impression that i think i'm really good at drumming; i'm not. I just started and i'm far from the level that i want to achieve. However, i DO think that i have the talent to achieve that level. All i gotta do is practice practice practice practice and then even more practice. And i mean a LOT of practice.

Ps: Lol, i drummed so much today, i have blisters on my fingers :P

-Edit-

I made a vid. of me drumming. Sorry for the bad sound quality :P

I used to drum a while ago. For like a year or so. I got bored of lessons and moved on to both Guitar, and after that I played Keyboard. All in all, I think I like drumming the most, and I really want to buy a new drum set. Maby you can tell me where to get some good once?

Anyway, good luck with drumming, and good luck with the blisters. hehe.

Well, i can't really give you advice on where to buy a drumset, since i live in Holland and not in the US :P
But what i did is buying a used one. The one i have is pretty decent, and it only cost me about 350 Euros (that's about 500 Dollars).
But if you want a really good one that is new you'll have to pay a lot more than that :P
And good luck with drumming to you too!

I know the feeling, I don't play drums, but guitar, and the stories are almost the same. When I play guitar I forget everything else and just have fun with it, and not once have I said that I don't feel like playing.
Just wanted to say that every instrument is a drug if a person loves it.

Haha, yeah, you got that right. Have fun with your guitar! :-)

You know, the funny thing is, I to, live in Holland. In Zeeland to be exact. But yeah, I'll search around around here and there. Thank you anyway. And cheers to you to.

Haha, i didn't realise that you live in Holland :P
Well, i can tell you that i got my drumset from Marktplaats.nl and i'm sure you heard of that site before :P
I hope you find one.

Cheers!

Do it man, do it! As I've always seen, people tend to let go of their dreams. Don't do that man. I'd rather live a life where I love my job and not make as much than have a steady going pay and be unhappy. Do what you love!

Wise words man, wise words.

Drumming is awesome ya. But only naked.

I never really tried that, but if you think it's fun i ain't going to stop you.
Have fun drumming naked.

I've always wanted to be a drummer, and I've loved playing since I hit my first high-hat symbol on my friends' set. I'm sad that I can't afford drums during these tough economic times, but my passion lives on. Sometimes I even get the air-drum goin while listinin to some of my favorite tunes on the bus ride home. Kudos for getting blisters, it just shows how devoted you really are.

Finally, another person who loves to drum!

It sucks that you can't get a drumset man. If i were rich i would buy you one, but i'm not rich so... yeah.
But you can always drum without a drumset. Drumming with your hands on a table and tapping your feet can be really fun too and you can get really good at it too. But of course, that's never going to be better than actually playing on a drumset. Maybe you'll be able to buy one if the economy is a bit better.

I appreciate your comment, thanks for stopping by! :-)

Lessons can kill enthusiasm like that, learning instruments is way more fun when you just play songs that you like at first, and then start working on techniques and stuff like that. Thats how I got into playing bass and drums ^_^

Well, i don't really agree with you here.
If somebody desides to learn an instrument on their own, they are more likely to give up. When you have lessons you need to go to every week that can stimulate you to continue to learn.
But, and here's the part that i do agree with you on, the lessons have to be at the right level for you. If the lessons are too easy it becomes boring (which happened to me) and if the lessons are too difficult then it's just frustrating. But if the lessons are on the same level as you are on (which is the case for me now) it can only stimulate you. Another pre is that, if you have your own teacher, you can ask him things about techniques for example.

But if you don't want to take lessons and just want to learn to play on your own, that's possible too. Lessons can help you really much, but the person who has to learn to play the instrument is still the same.

Hmm, maybe that was my problem. Now that I'm into DnB I want to get another drumset and take a wack at it again.

Of course, I don't know that I quite have the drummer personality. I never loved to show off on stage. Maybe I could be a closet drummer. Just like I'm a closet dancer. :p

Haha, if you want to buy a drumset then go buy one!
Just don't give up trying to soon and you'll be playing nice beats in no time.
And you don't need to have a drummer personality to like drumming ;-)

But seriously, IF you buy a drumset then don't give up to soon. If you just continue to try you'll be glad that you did that.
Good luck!

bedankt voor het zijn van de eerste nederlander die ik tegenkom op NEWGROUNS! XD

Geen probleem :P

If you keep this up i might hear some drum&bass songs poping out :P
By the way can you do the Amen drum?

I don't really know how the Amen drum goes, but i think i can do that. I'm not sure though, maybe i'll make a video of me drumming :P

This probably is gonna sound really retarded, but this inspired me ( XD )
I've been wanting to learn how to play the drums for a while now, but I've never had enough money to pay for lessens or a drum set, so I was stuck with just listnin to music, instead of playin it. Soon I'm gonna have more than enough to buy a drumset, so I think I will.
I know you said that you're not really good at drumming, but could you upload some of your drumming onto here?
Thanks for reading- Arshion, The Annoying Reviewer Guy

Haha, i'm glad i inspired you ^^
And yeah, i was already thinking of uploading some of my drumming. I'll do that later today, or tomorrow :-)

Also, you should really buy a drumset! :D
Have fun!

hahaha nice man, u got new hair colour :D

New hair colour? XD
No :P
I guess the lighting in that room is pretty weird :P

drumming's okay, it's just that when it's just drumming, it tends to sound bad. i think drumming is meant to be with other instruments. i have the same problem with blisters exept it's from golfing too much! ^_^
p.s.-when's ur next song coming out?

I know that drumming is meant to be with other instruments, but i just wanted to let people see how i drum, since they asked for it :P
And i don't know when my new song is coming out. I'll make a song when i feel like it and i have no idea when that's going to happen. But it can happen anytime, so keep checking out my page :D

Bang that drum..

oh yeah..

that's the stuff..

Haha, you're enjoying it aren't you? :P
